School of Science and Technology Students win ‘Best Overall Performance’ in Hackathon

On December 10 th , 2016, students from SST- Main campus participated in the Coding4TX Hackathon in Austin. This rigorous computer competition, powered by Code/Interactive and hosted by Galvanize, challenged students in both middle and high schools around Texas to identify a problem (related to bias or civics) and create a tech solution. Students were also challenged to create presentations to promote the program through websites and in a sales-like manner in front of a panel of judge that included staff from Microsoft and South by Southwest (SXSW). Carter LeBlanc, Paulina Pham and Matthew Nguyen designed an app called “Find a Friend” that enables end users to find a friend with similar likes and hobbies in their respective region. Jenny Soleman, Xavier Jackson and Derick Gomez created a website called “Skip” which helps ESL students, struggling students, and low resource students, find and access resources for free. Their project ‘Skip’ won in the middle school “Best Overall Performance” category.

After the competition, Mrs. Sherron shared, “These kids had a chance to learn some HTML and even dabbled in Photoshop and designed a logo. They all worked very hard and did a great job. I am so very proud!

SST Schools Welcome Cyber Security Education

This school year, the School of Science and Technology (SST) campuses introduced the Air Force Association’s (AFA) Cyber Security classes and clubs for middle school students. Through this program, based on the JeffOS, Security Showdown2, and Packet Protector Curriculums, students gain awareness of Cybersecurity, an Air Force Association CyberPatriot certificate, critical programming skills, early training for Cybersecurity jobs, a chance to compete in the National CyberPatriot Competition and even scholarship opportunities.

In our fast advancing, technology oriented world of today, we cannot underestimate the importance of Cyber Security. Ms. Shamika Lighteard, one of our Cyber Security teachers at SST Discovery told us, “Cyber Security is important because cyber-attacks are becoming more frequent every day on individuals, businesses and the government. People need to be aware of the proper precautions to take in order to protect themselves online, how to recognize vulnerabilities and the proper steps to take if their security is compromised.”
